Biologic Therapy for Severe Asthma

Patients with severe asthma often do not respond as well to commonly prescribed medications and their symptoms can remain uncontrolled despite high-dose treatments. Eosinophilic Asthma is a type of severe asthma, marked by high levels of the white blood cell, eosinophils.

People with Eosinophilic Asthma now have access to a life changing therapy, known as biologics.

Biologics target pathways in the immune system that cause the problematic airway inflammation seen in asthma. They are indicated for use in treating severe eosinophilic asthma and severe allergic asthma.

Professor Philip Thompson has been successfully treating patients with biologics since 2016 and specializes in obtaining access to drugs not yet available on the PBS for patients who qualify.  The clinic facilitates the management of the countries largest single group of patients on biologics.

The current biologics we are using are:

  • Nucala (Mepolizumab)  – a 4 weekly injection
  • Fasenra (Benralizumab) – an 8 weekly injection
  • Xolair (Omalizumab) – a 2 weekly injection
  • Dupixent (Dupilumab) – a 2 weekly injection

The clinic has had great success with patients response to the biologics and have seen first hand, the difference it has made to their lives.
